If you look at this or this you will see a grid of the city freeways. It’s the Minnesota Department of Transportations traffic page. I visit these pages more times than I should but I find it helpful when I need to get across town to see what roads I should take.
I live in the vicinity of 394 and 494 and I work around the area near 394 and 100. As you can tell by these maps, portions of 494 are white with ‘no data’ or it has an R sign on it describing the closing. This is due to the fact that it’s under construction. Today, they shut the south lanes of 494 down so they could divert traffic to the north side lanes.
Holy crap. It took me an hour to get this work this morning.
I don’t take 494 to work. I don’t even take 394 to work. I take back roads and frontage roads because I hate waiting in the on and off ramps for 20 minutes so I can go 70 miles an hour for 1 mile and then slam on my brakes and screech to a halt because some man tripping on acid in front of me thought he saw a pink elephant crossing the road. I stick with what is safe and what I can rely on to get me to work in a relatively short period of time – even if it’s through 23 stop lights and signs.
I value my life and my truck.
So because it was closing and it wasn’t moving at all I had every Tom, Dick and Sally on my roads trying to avoid 494. Oh Fer, Crying Out LOUD! It was horrendous to say the least.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m glad I’m here and not out there anymore…
