A good friend of mine at work was mugged a few blocks from her home in uptown on Friday night. They took her purse and keys but not before they threw her to the ground and used her girlfriends face as a punching bag.
When I found out I wanted to throw up. I feel so bad for her. I mean every woman fears this very thing – especially single women who are alone most of the time. I have worried myself sick many nights as I walk home at dusk from a walk I started too late. Of course, it can happen during the day as well but I’m more worried at night when my sight is poor.
Luckily, she helped the police catch one of the guys that night. Unfortunately he had already handed off her things to someone he was working with. He went to jail but today my friend received a phone call stating that this man that robbed and hurt her and her friend is getting out. He was never charged and no one posted bail according to the information she has acquired. He’s walking…
He has access to her keys - her home address and his partner in crime has already spent $300.00 (that she knows of) of her money. Needless to say she is petrified to go home tonight being the guy that went to jail is probably pissed about her identifying him. I’m scared for her. I offered my place for the night until her mom gets into town but I don’t think it’s enough to make her feel safe. Would I feel ok?
No – probably never again.
She called her bank at 1:30am the night of the attack but they didn’t close the card until the next afternoon. In that time the criminals (the partner that got away) had spent $300.00 and there are still three charges pending. Her bank won’t take off the charges until she writes a letter and it goes in front of some committee of some sort and if at that time it is deemed as charges from the criminal – they will remove them. If they don’t approve the removal she will get a letter in the mail. Until then she is screwed out of the money.
Whoever is reading this – don’t ever carry your personal check card on you at any time. Use a credit card for everything because you are guaranteed to get your money back if it is ever stolen. Don’t carry things that have your address on them. Don’t label your keys and have replacements hidden with a friend or location that you are able to access without getting inside your place or car. Carry as little with you as possible at all times.
I don’t know what else to say. I’ve always wanted to take a self defense class and now I have more reason to get my butt in one. It may not stop a bullet or even prevent an attack but it will make me feel safer being on my own.
