i like the black better. if you're focused on a red screen reading something and you look away, you see everything in blue.
its that wierd color aftereffect on your rods and cones.
I like the black too but I didn't want to freak anyone out. I'm not depressed or anything....
The black is better.
FOr the sake of the viewer in the internet universe, it's better to have either a dark background with very contrasting text, or the exact opposite. I have found that having a bright neutral color, such as a vibrant red, blue or green, can actually turn people away from your site because it actually hurts the eyes a little bit.
So if I had to choose between the red or the black background, I would choose the black.
Ultimately, for your site, feel, vibe and everything else, I actually think that a kind of faded color, such as #006699 or #666699 would work well. Some reason for your site I see using a bluish or purple hue would be more substantial and give the site more depth.
This way, text could be black or white and still be plenty effective.
i didn't get the sense that you were going goth on us J.
LOL!
Definately go with the red on black! Some of the best dressed mideival heroes wore black cloaks with red trim! Think Rutger Hauer on Ladyhawke. -Byrdman
