The Flippin' Ape Man

Some of you have heard D and I talk about the ‘Flippin’ Ape Man’ from time to time.  I know it sounds funny and just plain silly but The Flippin’ Ape Man is some serious stuff.

It all started a few months ago when my nephew D was sleeping over at my house.   We had just gotten done playing with some super cool flying UFO’s that I had gotten both of us for Christmas.  It was about 11:00pm and we were watching Nickelodeon.  I realize this is late for a kid to be up but you must realize that keeping a child up past his regular bed time and feeding them poorly is a requirement of being an aunt - at least this aunt anyway.

We were watching some late night cartoons when a commercial came on.  We were talking about something in reference to the cartoon so we only caught the last few seconds of the commercial. The commercial consisted of what looked like a dude from Planet of the Apes scratching records behind a DJ booth dressed like a pimped out hooligan.  We had ice cream, Doritos and root beer floats prior to The Flippin’ Ape Man incident so it is possible we were delirious from the lack of nutrition but I fear this isn’t the case.

Once the commercial was over both D and I turned to look at the other with our mouths dropped in astonishment.  We burst out into laughter on cue as if directed by some high school choir director.  We laughed for hours making up names for the crazy whacko.

The Flippin’ Ape Man.

Who else could he be?  Who else would be dressed that way trying to be all cool and hip in a Flippin’ Ape Man outfit??  It was and only could be the Flippin’ Ape Man.

We have tried and tried to find The Flippin’ Ape Man again but to avail.  He has never crossed our TV Screen again.  Time has passed but those three seconds we shared together watching and laughing to the same horrendous has been priceless.  Any time we are bored.  Any time we are stagnant we think of The Flipping Ape Man and a smile crosses our faces and we laugh once more.

I think it’s only fitting to write a little ditty for him in memory of the good times we have shared….

Oh Flippin’ Ape Man –

Oh Flippin’ Ape Man –

How you make us laugh

You scratch those records

Round and round

You look like an Ape

You need a hair cut.

The End.
