I was talking to my six year old nice Emma tonight. I asked her how her day was and what she did. I got the usual explanation, "I played, went sledding (they live in Alexandria) and made a picture in school."
"What did you make?" I asked eagerly.
"A Rudolph"
"Awww, I see. I bet it's cute." I stop when I heard a stern and booming voice in the background.
"EMMA? Are you still on the phone? You need to go to bed." Her father boomed loudly.
I hesitated and waited for her to say she had to go. Giving up on the obvious I asked her, "Hey Hun, sounds like you need to get going."
"NAW, not yet. He is only kidding." She answered matter of fact.
"Kidding? Well, he sounded serious to me." I stated concerned and wondering when she would give the phone back to my sister Lisa.
She whispered and listened in anticipation, "No, wait....."
We both listened to the background. One of her sisters was wailing that she didn't want to go to bed and asked why Emma was still on the phone. Out of the bed time banter a stern and serious shrill voice pierced the hectic air, "EMMA? ARE YOU STILL ON THAT PHONE? I THOUGHT YOUR DAD TOLD YOU TO GO TO BED?"
My sister Lisa's voice was so cold I was scared I was in trouble and out of the fear came the shaky voice, "OK! NOW they are serious. I have to go."
I laughed inside at her intelligence, "Ok Emma, it was nice talking to you."
Lisa's footsteps and haste was near and I heard, "You too., BYE!"
The familiar voice sounded on the phone. I was laughing with glee inside and out loud. I told Lisa what happened and she responded. "She is much smarter than her age should allow."
..... it's no wonder we call her the devil span. She knows before we know. This only goes to prove the saying, "Kids. They are much smarter than you think."
